Course Content

The MSc Sports Engineering course is a one year full-time course or two year part-time course. The course is led by Dr. Simon Choppin and consists of nine taught modules, plus our industry linked research project. All modules are mandatory and have been tailored to match the previous experience of a graduate engineer/ physical scientist. The vast majority of teaching is in small groups (typically less than 20) allowing for bespoke delivery.

Our course aims to give you practical experience in areas of study relevant to the sports engineering industry. Many modules contain projects that require the student to create, design, test or innovate. Our modules are continuously reviewed and altered to reflect our student feedback but we always aim to give you as much hands-on experience as possible.

A summary of our course modules is below:

Mechanics of sports equipment

This module considers the fundamental mechanics of sports equipment, allowing you to develop knowledge and understanding to help analyse and improve sports equipment.

Lead: Prof. David James

Frame Vibration

Measurement techniques in sports engineering and biomechanics

Lead: Dr. Marcus Dunn

In this module you develop your skills which allow you to collect, analyse and interpret data as an independent researcher.

Computer simulation of sports equipment

Lead: Dr. John Hart

This module introduces key concepts and tools relating to the computational design and assessment of sports equipment.

Numerical programming in sports engineering

Lead: Dr. John Kelley

This module introduces numerical programming. We aim to develop your knowledge and experience with applications relevant to industry. Many of us use programming tools and we run you through examples taken from projects we have completed in our own research.

Innovation and enterprise in sports engineering

Lead: Dr. John Hart

This module explores the innovation process in the world of sport.

Human factors in sports engineering

Lead: Prof. Jon Wheat

This module provides you with a critical understanding of important factors related to working with humans in sports engineering.

Physiology of sport and exercise

Lead: Dr. David Claxton

This module develops your knowledge and understanding of the physiology underpinning sport and exercise.

Research methods

Lead: James Newman

This module introduces the research process, its purpose and structure. It allows you to identify areas of investigation, critically evaluate and interpret others’ work and plan and present a research proposal.

Please note there maybe be slight variation in course modules and module content each year. For more information on the module content please visit the official prospectus page and our You Tube video.
