PhD Sports Engineering

The Sports Engineering Research Group (SERG) at SHU is committed to nurturing the next generation of academics, researchers, industry leaders and innovators in the dynamic field of sports engineering. We provide flexible yet robust support for PhD students, fostering an environment conducive to academic growth and innovation – inviting students based in sheffield and overseas, in full time and part time study.

Through a multidisciplinary approach, students benefit from the expertise of leading researchers in biomechanics, materials science, data analysis, and sports technology. The group offers personalised guidance, mentorship, and access to state-of-the-art facilities, including cutting-edge laboratories and equipment tailored for sports engineering research.

PhD students are encouraged to explore diverse research avenues, from enhancing athletic performance to improving sports equipment design and safety standards. Regular seminars, workshops, and collaborative projects facilitate knowledge exchange and networking opportunities within the academic and industry spheres, in collaboration with the Academy of Sport & Physical Activity and the SHU Doctoral School. Moreover, students receive assistance in securing funding, publishing research findings, and presenting at conferences, thus preparing them for successful careers in academia, industry, or entrepreneurship.
